Background

The Azeisky coal mine (Азейский разрез - Тулунуголь) is an operating surface mine in Irkutsk Oblast, Russia. Azeisky coal mine is owned and operated by a branch of Vostsibugol LLC, which in turn is owned by En+ Group.

The mine is part of Tulunugol branch which also operates the younger Tulunugol-Mugunsky coal mine. The two mine sites are about 50 km apart.

Mining has taken place at the Azeisky coal mine since 1969. Production peak was achieved in 1987 - 15 million tonnes.

Information on the mine's production is very limited. 2016 production according to Wikipedia was 2.3 Mt. Joint production of the Azeisky mine and the Tulunugol-Mugunsky coal mine in 2018 was 7.5 million tonnes. In the first half of 2022, the combined production of Tulunugol mines (Azeisky and Tulunugol-Mugunsky coal mine) was 2.25 million tonnes, which was 21% higher than in the same period in 2021. A media source from August 2023 stated that the actual production capacity of the mine is 1.8 million tonnes.

The main consumer of coal produced by Azeisky are the power stations of Irkutsenergo - Novo-Irkutsk power station, Novo-Ziminskaya power station, Irkutsk-9 power station, Irkutsk-10 power station, Irkutsk-11 power station, Baikal power station and Selenginskaya power station.
